Hi, I’m Téa Sloane. I’m 11 years old, I live in the Bay Area of sunny California, and I’m a yoga student and teacher. I was first introduced to yoga when I was 3 years old. But, it wasn’t until a few summers ago, when I was about to turn 7, that I really started to do yoga on my own. I remember the moment where it all started - It was just one of those summer days, where the sun’s out and bright, and you're just playing around in the grass. I was with Haley (my mentor), and we were performing cartwheels and dance moves, and then she showed me a yoga move. I watched her, paused, and then tried it. Maybe it was my background in gymnastics, maybe it was just a lucky first try, I don’t really know, but I could do it. I couldn’t believe that a yoga move that looked so hard, didn’t feel hard. In fact, it just felt right to my body; in a sort of magical and exciting way.
From that moment forward, I became yoga obsessed! I went to yoga classes, talked to people who loved and taught yoga, tried to find mentors, and learned everything that I could. I spent time learning new poses, studying anatomy, and reading the Yamas and Niyamas (the principles of yoga). In between homework, basketball, coding, and dancing around my house, I practice and teach classes every week -- vinyasa yoga to high school students at Miramonte High, restorative candlelit yoga at Orinda Fitness, and a donation-based all-levels class at Lafayette Reservoir.
I completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at Prana Yoga Center in La Jolla, CA from June to August of 2017 and I look forward to October 2018 when I turn 13 and can officially register with Yoga Alliance to receive my RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) title.
It’s been a really awesome journey so far, and I know that yoga is going to be a part of my life forever. I’m going to keep trying new yoga moves in the grass, with my mentor, Haley. And I’m going to keep using yoga to help my students find their edges and those moments where they feel triumphant, super sweaty, and just totally alive. I also want to keep teaching patience, positivity, self-love, and how to take it slow and easy. Basically, I’m just going to keep on teaching! Because people need yoga, girls need yoga, women need yoga, and people who are struggling in any way need yoga. Also, I need yoga, and I’m so glad It found me.
Namaste!
